Staff stated the latest rendering of Evergreen Multi-level Parking Facility was on the computer for Committee Members to look at. The project is progressing well.
VI.
Unfinished Business
A. Downtown Medford Summer Poster
Nancy Passey stated the summer poster is available through MURA for distribution. Staff stated Kurt Olsen, MURA Executive Director distributes the posters to merchants downtown himself.
Staff gave credit to Passey Advertising, Inc. for their ingenuity of the wand writing, car, and vibrant colors on the posters.
B. DownTowner Summer Issue
Nancy Passey reported the Summer Issue of the DownTowner has a lot of information of Downtown and MURA.
Jerry Ehlers inquired whether ads in the DownTowner were challenging to sell. Nancy stated it was challenging for the summer issue, due to following the Art in Bloom issue.
Hannelore Rippel stated joint advertising helps the merchants when the economy is tight. The Mail Tribune has discontinued joint advertising. Nancy Passey stated she would talk to the Mail Tribune concerning downtown merchants using joint advertising.
C. Downtown Medford Summer Light Pole Banner
The Summer light pole banners will be delivered to MURA Friday, June 18, 2004. Passey Advertising will inquire as to what time MURA can expect delivery in order for MURA to expedite installation of the banners before the Medford Cruise that weekend.
The Committee unanimously agreed the banners would bring life to the downtown area.
F. Evergreen Multi-level Parking Facility Groundbreaking (Taken out of order)
Invitations for the groundbreaking of Evergreen Multi-level Parking Facility went out last week. Press release went out today, June 16, 2004. Staff stated Skanska USA Building, Inc., delivered twelve hard hats today for the groundbreaking ceremony.
The Committee discussed battery operated PA systems. Someone mentioned RVTD has a battery operated PA system that the Agency might borrow for the ceremony. Nancy Passey stated Guitar Center would more than likely have them for sale.
Nancy Passey informed the Committee that the decorative trash receptacles that were used during Art in Bloom are on loan from US Bank (Downtown Branch) to the Agency for the groundbreaking ceremony. They must be returned empty and clean.
The Committee unanimously agreed to have pale green icing on the cake for the groundbreaking ceremony. Elizabeth Hansen volunteered to assist in serving the cake. Set-up will take place around eight-thirty a.m.
Jim Kelly inquired who would be turning the dirt at the groundbreaking ceremony? Staff stated MURA?s nine Board members and Executive Director, and the Developer.
D. Marketing of MURA: Intergovernment, Media, etc.
Staff stated the Committee should explore marketing MURA to generate excitement about its presence.
Bill Dames remarked that he, the Mayor, Council Representatives Jim Kuntz and Jason Anderson met to renew dialogue between the City and MURA.
Jim Kelly stated there needs to be communication to the general public of MURA?s nineteen projects and where those projects fit into our footprint (MURA boundaries).
Staff suggested cooperative marketing of ?urban renewal? with surrounding town?s urban renewal agencies.
Randy Passey reported that MURA Staff, along with Passey Advertising, is designing a projects brochure.
Hannelore Rippel stated television ads ?grab? viewer?s interest. Television is powerful. Staff responded the Marketing budget allows six videos, including four events, one façade, and one parking video.
Staff had recommended to Passey Advertising that the DownTowner be distributed in either the Saturday or the Monday newspaper instead of the Sunday paper, so that it does not get lost with all the other advertisements. Passey Advertising and the Committee agreed.
Staff suggested putting the DownTowner in doctors and dentist?s offices and the airport. A Committee member suggested also the mall. The Chamber would charge to put the DownTowner in their monthly mailing.
The Committee agreed the media must be kept informed of what is happening with MURA projects; and MURA should have the media revisit accomplishments.
Nancy Passey suggested video footage of the Vogel Plaza fountains, the blooming flower baskets, and the newly installed summer banners, as an on-going series.
Bill Dames brought to the Committee?s attention the Liberty Park issues and briefly discussed the Liberty Park Solutions Team?s last meeting.
Jim Kelly asked whether MURA would consider an Urgent Care Facility downtown, possibly located in the new Evergreen mixed-use project. Staff reported that the Agency cannot fund an Urgent Care Facility but the building where Blue Cross Blue Shield used to be is vacant. Asante, also a downtown presence, might be a source to inquire of this possibility.
E. Wine and Walk Event
Jerry Ehlers stated the Heart of Medford Association had discussed a ?Wine and Walk? event at their last meeting.
Randy Passey stated he spoke with some of the local wineries and they are interested in the event but could not do the event for free. It was suggested to sell the wine glasses and the wine.
The Committee agreed there are a lot of regulations that need to be looked into and worked out before this could be an annual event. The ?Wine and Walk? event should be independent and not tied into another event.
The Committee agreed Bill Dames will call Bend and Randy Passey will call Grants Pass and Newport to find out details on their ?Wine and Walk? events and bring the information back to the next scheduled Marketing Committee meeting.
