Originally housed in a brick building on Main Street, the new First Presbyterian Church was constructed in 1926 on the site of the minister's residence. Portland architect F. Manson White (a nephew of the famed New York City architect, Sanford White) first presented designs with lavish detailing completely covering the exterior. This must have been either too elaborate for the congregation, or too expensive, since the final design was trimmed to the elaborate door and window surrounds that accent the otherwise plain stucco walls. As the congregation has grown, they've added on to the building with a classroom addition (1951) and a bell tower (1983), while always respecting the character of White's original design.
