The Southern Oregon Historical Society?s mission is to collect, preserve, research and interpret the artifacts and documents that connect us to the past. Through exhibitions, historic sites, a research library, educational programs, publications, and outreach, the Society creates opportunities to explore the history that has shaped Southern Oregon. The Society maintains 10 properties (9 in Jacksonville, Oregon) that are open to the public on a year round or seasonal basis. Jacksonville Museum (1883 former county courthouse), 5th & C streets, Jacksonville Children?s Museum (1911 former Jail) 5th & C streets, Jacksonville C.C. Beekman House (ca 1873), Laurelwood & California streets, Jacksonville C.C. Beekman Bank (1863), California & 3rd streets, Jacksonville Catholic Rectory (1861), 4th & C streets, Jacksonville Third Street Artisan Studio, California & 3rd streets, Jacksonville History Store (located in the 1880 U.S. Hotel), California & 3rd streets, Jacksonville History Center (1948), 106 N. Central, Medford, Research Library, (1948), 106 N. Central, Medford, Hanley Farm (1857), 1053 Hanley Rd. Central Point. The Society owns and manages approximately 81,000 artifacts that are stored and then used as needed to create site exhibits. The research library houses over 3,900 linear feet of manuscripts, 750,000 historic images, 27,000 books, maps, and oral histories used by the general public.
